WOMENBUILD : Inspiring Career Paths In Technology

While capturing some of the show floor buzz last week at PDC - I made it a point to save some time for the WomenBuild Networking Event. The workshop invited attendees (both men AND women) to collaborate ideas and formulate solutions using Lego Bricks. Clearly, they're not just for kids anymore! As brains melded, ideas flowed and great conversation ensued- there was also another goal of the event and that was to inspire people from all walks of life to get excited by technology and realize the multiple different career paths one can take in the technical field. Dion Almaer (Google) shares his thoughts about some of the things he saw at PDC 2008. "Windows Azure looks great. The “on premise” feature looks particularly intriguing. If they can bridge the data center and the cloud, they have something quite compelling… I am curious about the details… Even though we knew about this (PDC announcements), I don’t know if we thought they were this far along. jQuery and Microsoft: Repercussions of Yesterday's Announcement

Microsoft announced yesterday it is looking to make jQuery part of their official development platform which means that jQuery will be distributed with Visual Studio. The news got a positive reception by the jQuery team: "we are quite excited by these prospects and wishes to take this opportunity to welcome both companies to the jQuery community." Blogs posts by Scott Guthrie and Scott Hanselman, both at Microsoft, have posts on the subject matter from their perspective.

Micrsoft Demonstrates DryadLINQ

Developed by a team from Microsoft Research, DryadLINQ is a powerful programming environment that enables ordinary programmers to write large-scale data parallel applications to run on large PC clusters. The platform comprises Dryad, a distributed execution engine that allows reliable, distributed computing across thousands of servers for large-scale data parallel applications, and the .NET Language Integrated Query, or LINQ, which allows developers to write and debug applications in a SQL-like query language, using the entire .NET library and Microsoft Visual Studio.

Microsoft announced this morning that the next release of Microsoft Office will include “lightweight”, browser-based versions of some of its main office software products - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote (read the full story). Here is what people are saying: Joel Oleson thinks this is a pretty exciting stuff! Meshfied Applications = Awesome Sync + Social Networking

I would like to emphasize that this submission is a two-part submission – part one is the feature itself – it’s a powerful and easy to use clipboard history. Part two is the actual series of blog posts, which show developers how to create this really cool feature for their Visual Studio 2008 environment. The code and design choices behind all the features you see demonstrated in the video are explained in great detail in the blog posts. Description
This video shows a multi-channel version of the Virtual Earth control running on a custom curved screen that provides a 180 degree horizontal field of view. The screen is created using eight high-end full 1080p projectors with a professional warping and blending system. The code is a modified version of a sample project with a custom camera class to properly adjust the FOV and camera offset for each projector and some code to synchronize the camera position across the network. The system is being controlled with a wireless Xbox 360 controller.

Microsoft Azure Aims to Re-define the OS

Blogger Richard MacManus was among a small group of people who had a roundtable today with Microsoft executives Ray Ozzie, Bob Muglia and Amitabh Srivastava. The topic of conversation was Microsoft Azure, the cloud computing operating system announced earlier today.
