The clear gravity of the situation pushed the legislation forward. Some might say the current mess couldn't be foreseen, yet in 2005 Alan Greenspan told Congress how urgent it was for it to act in the clearest possible terms: If Fannie and Freddie ``continue to grow, continue to have the low capital that they have, continue to engage in the dynamic hedging of their portfolios, which they need to do for interest rate risk aversion, they potentially create ever-growing potential systemic risk down the road,'' he said. ``We are placing the total financial system of the future at a substantial risk.''

What happened next was extraordinary. For the first time in history, a serious Fannie and Freddie reform bill was passed by the Senate Banking Committee. The bill gave a regulator power to crack down, and would have required the companies to eliminate their investments in risky assets.

Different World

If that bill had become law, then the world today would be different. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, a blizzard of terrible mortgage paper fluttered out of the Fannie and Freddie clouds, burying many of our oldest and most venerable institutions. Without their checkbooks keeping the market liquid and buying up excess supply, the market would likely have not existed.

But the bill didn't become law, for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it on a party-line vote in the committee, signaling that this would be a partisan issue. Republicans, tied in knots by the tight Democratic opposition, couldn't even get the Senate to vote on the matter.

That such a reckless political stand could have been taken by the Democrats was obscene even then. Wallison wrote at the time: ``It is a classic case of socializing the risk while privatizing the profit. The Democrats and the few Republicans who oppose portfolio limitations could not possibly do so if their constituents understood what they were doing.''

...

There has been a lot of talk about who is to blame for this crisis. A look back at the story of 2005 makes the answer pretty clear.

Oh, and there is one little footnote to the story that's worth keeping in mind while Democrats point fingers between now and Nov. 4: Senator John McCain was one of the three cosponsors of S.190, the bill that would have averted this mess.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aSKSoiNbnQY0

<evnet:views>413</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/431426/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>According to Bloomberg, Democrats!Bloomberg said:

A lot of enterprise applications where data is managed has a need to see two or more modules at the same time, like if you open a customer, you also want to open sales reports and maybe warehouse stocks.

I'm currently developing a winforms+WCF enterprise application, a LOT of stuff in it. Right now, I am using panels and an "outlook bar thingy" on the left + a treeview on top of it for subsections. However, I have not yet solved the issue how to make two or more of each section visible for the user at the same time, I mean the way you could do it with MDI windows.

How can this problem be solved in a non-MDI environment? Running several copies of the application?

I am not asking for a "how to do MDI in WPF" but I would like to know what other ways are there to solve such issues since I am probably not alone about this.

The Start Button

 One of my pet
hates ... The Start Button

If I was to wish
to change one thing in Windows it would be the Start button.

I was more than
disappointed when Vista arrived to discover that designers had decided that to
keep continuity with previous versions of Windows and keep the Start button with nothing more than a make-over. But it did seem for awhile that with Longhorn it was at last disappearing.

The Start button
is actually an extremely useful UI vehicle as it allows someone who is unfamiliar
with a machine a standard avenue to discovery, this has to be applauded as it
is a simple construct that is universal but it is in the same token very restrictive. If anyone remembers Windows before 95,
then you know that Windows could indeed be a disorganized mess. The Start
button offers a simple restriction, where the only other alternative to navigating
through menus was groups of icons on the desktop.

In recent years
to help stem the sea of desktop icons, the Quick menu has appeared however if you
want to have some sort of organization and (here comes the important word) 'categorization' it meant creating folder structures that turned into a skilled drilling frenzy whether
on desktop or in Start Menu.

However, what’s
the point of trying to get organized? Who has that many programs anyway? Well the
simple reason is that we all now have loads of programs, files, documents,
videos, films, pictures just lots and lots of stuff all over the place.
Strangely enough however I don’t want to find anything using a search term, that’s
like admitting defeat.

The Start button
doesn’t really help as the menu is small and restrictive, you can't move it or
expand it and you can’t have more than one of them such as an ‘Office Start Button’,
a ‘Games Start Button’. So to get some semblance of categorized organization I’m
using a Dock, like you can find on the Mac or Linux that has tabs to get a bit
of organization.

Now that Windows
7 development is in full swing can I please ask the UI designers to take a long
hard look at the Start Button. I thought we almost had it with a similar Vista
Start button appearance type thing in Office 2007, I just wanted to rip it off the
top right hand part of my Office window and place it next to the Start button
and say … this is what I mean, more of this please!

So what do say
Microsoft? Can you help me keep my hair please?

<evnet:views>856</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/431158/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>

With the crash-catching and application recovery improvements in Windows Vista this doesn't happen often, but when it does it's a real pain.

This got me wondering whether WTM could be made a more reliable way of rescuing the OS. I'm thinking of something where a small section of the CPU and RAM resources could be permanently reserved for use by WTM in the event of a freeze. This way WTM can still be started and used to trim some troublesome processes to restore Windows to a functioning state. I'm aware that the resource requirements of WTM vary based on other currently running processes, but surely calculating this would not be overly complex.

The concept seems so obvious to me that I'm certain Windows already has something similar, though if the feature does indeed exist it clearly isn't working the way it should. What are your thoughts on it? Do you think it would be useful or viable?

<evnet:views>755</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/431152/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>The other day my system encountered a full freeze where I wasn't able to access Windows Task Manager, therefore making a reboot the only solution.
