As you may have noticed, we have smilies back Smiley

We'll add a menu or toolbar of them to the editor soon, but I had this other thought today that you folks might find interesting. I was thinking of creating some additional emoticons like ( 8 ) to make the channel 8 logo (8 with wings) or (9) to show a little 9 guy, (10) ... you get the idea. Just thought it might add some nice visual touches when folks want to reference other sites. Any other ideas for emoticons that would fit well onto C9? (vs) for the Visual Studio one? (vista) for the vista icon? I'm just throwing out ideas here Big Smile

Cool idea, but maybe you shouldn't use ( and ), because those are pretty common. Maybe {9} or [9] or <9>. I think I prefer <9> because that is used even less than the other 2 (that could occur in a block of source code). Speaking of which: could you add a function to add a block of source code? I don't expect syntax coloring (yet Wink ) but just a basic code block construction.

Yay, smilies are back! Big Smile

I agree with Tommy about not using () for smilies, <9> sounds the best to me too.

And a code block would be great. Just a simple
code goes here
that throws the code in a pre that uses a monospace font (Consolas preferably) and some scrolling (similar to what I use on my blog). Syntax highlighting can come later.

EDIT: On an unrelated note, C9 has been having some performance problems the last few days. Sometimes it's snappy, sometimes it's really slow. Often the Ajax load just sits there and does nothing, and then I have to refresh the entire page to be able to retry the request. For example, I had to type this post twice because it just sat on 'Saving' after clicking edit with nothing happening.

Or \8 Tongue Out - a whole set of escape codes - hehe.

Actually, because I'm thinking about it, would it be a great problem to give us escape codes? like for example, you add <8> and I need the <8> couldn't we just get the < with \< - or something similar?

I would like to use brackets.

There is less code posted here then smileys.

There also needs to be a "ignore smilies, I'm posting code snippets" button:  as you no doubt know, there are certain smiley combinations that are extremely common in code and cause problems when you try to post them.
Another reason why we need the ability to put code blocks in the editor: that way they could just ignore 'smilies' that are in a code block, and we wouldn't need the "ignore smilies" button anymore.

I hope code blocks, even if they don't have syntax highlighting yet, are high on the team's to do list.
what about msn icon support (that jonathanh coded into to v3?)

like [y] = thumbs up   [b] = beer(28) etc

seems like a good idea... odd that I didn't see that already, I essentially 'ported' over the whole emoticon list that I found in v3 ... I'll look  around for it Smiley
I actually hate the smilies ... I really do. Could we put an option in the profile so we could turn them off, and just render the inputted text instead ??
When asked if you can learn to love the C9 smilies just say Yes I Can!

Fact: Not liking the C9 smilies is the same as not liking Sunshine, Fresh air and cool Summer winds.
Fact: In Iceland we have very little sunshine, lots of fresh air and exremely cool summer winds blowing all the time ... but I still don't like the smilies ...
I can live with seeing C9 smilies.. I mean they aren't as polished the default live messenger emiticons.. or other fully featured forums

but

I can't bare looking at a close up of dogs eyeball/ jamie seriously I have nothing agianst dogs, i like dogs.. but jeesh

All we need now are smileys on 8 Smiley

I like the idea of having (Y) and (N) etc.

How about the -.- smiley? I was asking for that when I joined, maybe now's my chance Big Smile
